Our Story
The idea behind Learn Tennis was generated during the summer of 2021 when Tasmiyah was coaching summer camps. On the last camp day of the week, one of the kids’ approached her crying because he was unable to re-register for next week, due to his parents financial status and the high costs of the camp. From there, the idea of Learn Tennis was formed. To give underprivileged kids the opportunity to learn and pursue the sport of tennis with experienced coaches, for free.
Why It is Important
It is no surprise tennis is one of the worlds’ most expensive sports, when adding up equipment and lesson prices, families are easily looking to pay anywhere from $3,000 plus annually. The costs may even be higher for youth players, as they are constantly growing out of their rackets and advancing to different ball types.
Engaging with the correct equipment is a crucial part of tennis. Playing with the wrong racket size or wrong ball type can lead to frustration from the participant who is faced with challenges too difficult for their level. The use of wrong fitted equipment is very common and is the cause of low self esteem and the reason children give up on the sport. Learn Tennis provides children with the correct equipment as well as appropriate challenges to ensure children are able to rapidly develop their skills, stay confident, and have fun.
Soft Skills Taught Through Our Program
Players are not only gaining the skills and training on how to play tennis, but also are being subconsciously taught many soft skills that they will carry with them for the rest of their lives.
Sportsmanship
Good sportsmanship is a key skill in order to becoming a mature, and respectful adult. Good sportsmanship ensures self control and respect for oneself, and others.
Teamwork
Teamwork is a soft skill used throughout one’s life. Effective teamwork can ensure productivity, increased innovation, and overall a better morale and bond with others.
Respect
Respect is a key attribute which needs to be instilled in kids from a young age. It is important for kids to see the value of not only people, but things around them. Such as people’s ideas, the equipment they use, and their environment.
Perseverance
As kids we were told the sky is the limit, but once things start to get a little challenging, giving up seems to be a good idea. Perseverance teaches us to never give up, and is a skill that can do wonders when put into play. In order to be successful in any sport, it is important to persevere through the challenges.
Confidence
The key to freedom is self-confidence. It allows you to break away from self doubt and negative thoughts, allowing you to be fearless and do what one’s heart desires. Sports help kids feel confident about their skills and abilities, allowing them to break through their wall of self doubt.
